The Global African Hydrogen Summit 2025, held from 9–11 September in Windhoek, Namibia, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and youth from across Africa and the world to chart a sustainable hydrogen future for the continent.
As a Supporting Partner, the Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) played an active role in advancing dialogue, strengthening youth participation, and showcasing the organisation’s commitment to green hydrogen research and capacity development.
SASSCAL was represented by Executive Director Prof. Nelago Indongo, Director for Science, Technology and Capacity Development Dr. Budzanani Tacheba, and other staff members who joined leaders and stakeholders to highlight the Centre’s contribution to Africa’s green hydrogen journey.

Dr. Tacheba contributed to two critical platforms:
- The Technical Seminar, where he shared insights on financing, technology, and capacity development — including opportunities from German and European funding instruments and the role of science and research in delivering working prototypes through initiatives such as the H2Atlas Africa.
- The Youth Programme (side event), where he inspired young participants by emphasising their role in shaping Africa’s sustainable energy future. He highlighted how green hydrogen can drive industrial transformation, create millions of green jobs, and address Africa’s dual challenges of climate change and energy poverty.

As part of its commitment to youth empowerment, SASSCAL facilitated the participation of 100 students in the Youth Programme and Exhibition. Through this initiative, students had the opportunity to learn, network, and engage with industry leaders, gaining invaluable exposure to green hydrogen developments and careers.

This partnership underscores SASSCAL’s ongoing commitment to advancing greenhydrogen research, building youth capacity, and fostering regional collaboration. By working alongside international and Namibian partners, SASSCAL continues to position Africa as a key player in the global clean energy transition.
With the support of the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), SASSCAL implements the Green Hydrogen Programme, which focuses on research, pilot projects, and scholarship initiatives such as the Youth for Green Hydrogen (Y4H2) Programme. These efforts aim to build skills, empower young people, and generate the knowledge needed to accelerate Africa’s green hydrogen future.
