Dr. Chisha Mzyece has joined the SASSCAL Zambia Node as a Scientific Officer, where she will apply her expertise in environmental science to support research, climate service development, and knowledge dissemination across SASSCAL’s priority areas.
She brings extensive experience in local and international research on water quality management, academic teaching, and technical advisory services. Her research portfolio includes assessments of water quality in cholera-prone areas of Lusaka, Zambia, to strengthen public health protection, as well as the evaluation of water and sanitation upgrades implemented under the Millennium Challenge Account Zambia Compact II. Her Master’s research in Australia focused on assessing the effects of property management planning on water quality in the Pullen Pullen Catchment in South East Queensland. For her PhD, she applied Bayesian belief networks to model faecal pollution risks from onsite sanitation systems, developing decision-support tools to identify high-risk areas for intervention.
Following her doctoral studies, Dr. Chisha has undertaken a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Zambia, contributing to research on climate-driven impacts on groundwater quality in the Upper Zambezi Catchment under the SASSCAL-funded Tipping Points Explained by Climate Change project. This work aimed to develop strategies to safeguard rural water supplies in the face of climate variability.
Beyond research, She has served on boards of the Zambia Environmental Management Agency, the National Housing Authority, and the National Remote Sensing Centre among others.
