SASSCAL has taken another step in expanding its regional membership with a high-level engagement in Tanzania.
Prof. Gabriel Miguel, Chairperson of the SASSCAL Governing Board, together with his delegation, met with Dr. Richard Muyungi, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Vice President of Tanzania. The meeting took place in Dar es Salaam on 6 March 2026.
The discussion focused on the possible expansion of SASSCAL membership to Tanzania. Dr. Muyungi welcomed the initiative and highlighted that SASSCAL’s work strongly aligns with the government’s development priorities, particularly the pillar focusing on environmental sustainability and climate resilience. Both sides agreed to continue discussions towards establishing a formal collaboration.
Also present at the meeting were SASSCAL Interim Vice-Chair Alexandria Angala and SASSCAL Executive Director Prof. Nelago Indongo, along with Ambassador Baraka Luvanda, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Vice President, and senior officials from both the Office of the Vice President and SASSCAL.
SASSCAL has been mandated by its Council of Ministers to expand its membership across the SADC region, recognising that climate change does not respect borders and that Southern Africa faces shared climate and environmental challenges.
Tanzania is the second country that SASSCAL has engaged in recent weeks, following a similar visit to Malawi two weeks ago. The engagements are part of SASSCAL’s broader effort to strengthen regional cooperation in climate research, data sharing, and sustainable land management.
