Human Capital Development is one of the three strategic objectives of SASSCAL. It is against this background that SASSCAL and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the SASSCAL Graduate Studies Programme in Integrated Water Resources Management (SGSP-IWRM). The SGSP-IWRM is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and will be hosted by NUST.
The MOU provides a platform for strengthening the region’s capacity in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Like all of SASSCAL’s programmes, this PhD Programme will take a regional focus in its enrolment and implementation and will identify and enrol the best calibre of students in the region. The establishment of the SGSP-IWRM is the first phase of the establishment of SASSCAL’s Centres of Excellence. It is envisioned that the Centres of Excellence will be established in all SASSCAL Member States.
The SGSP-IWRM is envisaged to play an important role in strengthening the capacity of the region by producing a highly skilled labour force that will partake in creating innovative solutions to respond to the climate change and water resources management needs of the region.
