28 October 2026 | Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
SASSCAL is participating in the International Conference on Circular Economy, Renewable Energies and Green Hydrogen in Africa (ICERA 2026), taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 27 to 29 October 2026. Four SASSCAL staff members are attending the conference and sharing research findings, experiences and lessons from SASSCAL’s work in green hydrogen, renewable energy, climate change adaptation and capacity development in Southern Africa. The conference brings together researchers, scientists, policymakers, industry experts and development partners to discuss how African countries can move towards cleaner energy, make better use of resources and create opportunities for sustainable economic development.
This year’s conference is jointly organised by Jimma University in Ethiopia and the University of Rostock in Germany, with financial support from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The main objective of ICERA 2026 is to encourage discussions on Africa’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable fuels, while promoting circular economy practices that reduce waste and make better use of available resources. The conference also aims to support the development of action plans that can guide African countries in their transition to greener economies.
SASSCAL Shares Research and Experiences from Southern Africa
As part of its participation, SASSCAL is presenting research and experiences from projects and programmes being implemented across Southern Africa.
Ms. Fenni M.T. Shidhika Amadhila is presenting on SASSCAL’s Progress and Lessons on Green Hydrogen Pilot Projects, Research and Capacity Development. Her presentation highlights SASSCAL’s experiences in supporting green hydrogen development through research, pilot projects and skills development.
Dr. Anacleto Diogo is presenting on Integrating Climate Data and Remote Sensing to Support Renewable Energy Planning in Angola. His presentation focuses on how climate information and satellite data can support better planning and decision-making in the renewable energy sector.
Mr. Shimweefeleni Hamutwe is presenting on SASSCAL’s Role in the Production of Renewable Ammonia for Global Markets in Africa: Fueling Europe’s Decarbonisation Ambitions through the PRAGMA-E Project. His presentation explores SASSCAL’s role in research supporting renewable ammonia production and its potential contribution to cleaner energy markets.
Dr. Musonda Ng’onga is presenting on Climate Adaptation Financing for Renewable Energy Transitions in the SADC Region: Challenges, Opportunities and Pathways for Climate-Resilient Development. His presentation looks at financing challenges and opportunities for supporting renewable energy development while strengthening climate resilience in Southern Africa.
Through these presentations, SASSCAL is sharing knowledge that can contribute to the development of green hydrogen and renewable energy industries, while highlighting the importance of climate information, research, financing and skills development.
Strengthening Partnerships and Regional Cooperation
SASSCAL’s participation in ICERA 2026 also provides an opportunity to engage with international researchers, universities, governments and development partners working in renewable energy and green hydrogen.
The discussions are important for Southern Africa, where countries are exploring opportunities to develop green hydrogen industries, expand renewable energy production and create jobs through sustainable technologies.
SASSCAL has been actively involved in the ICERA conference series and co-hosted ICERA 2025 in Windhoek, Namibia. Its continued participation reflects the organisation’s commitment to supporting research, sharing scientific knowledge and strengthening cooperation between African and international partners.
Following the conference sessions, participants are scheduled to take part in a field visit from 30 to 31 October 2026, providing further opportunities for learning and exchanging practical experiences.
Through its participation in ICERA 2026, SASSCAL continues to promote research, partnerships and capacity development that support Southern Africa’s transition towards cleaner energy and climate-resilient development.
