The Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) has extended its 2024/2025 Youth for Green Hydrogen (Y4H2) Scholarships to ensure that students complete their studies and obtain the relevant qualifications.
This move will enable students at various higher learning institutions in Namibia to complete their studies.
According to SASSCAL Executive Director, Prof. Nelago Indongo, the initial scholarship was due to end in December 2025. She said the Y4H2 Scholarship Programme, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, (BMFTR) has since 2023, enabled many students to pursue different qualifications.
The first cohort of students was awarded scholarships between 2023 and 2024, while the second and current intake received scholarships from 2024/2025, but now extended to 2026.
The students enrolled at higher learning institutions are pursuing Master’s qualifications in different areas including Sustainable Energy Systems, Environmental Engineering, Transport and Logistics Management, while those enrolled at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions are studying Electrical engineering, Construction engineering, Mechanical engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, as well as Plumbing and Pipe fitting, amongst many others.
“These disciplines directly contribute to Namibia’s climate resilience, clean energy transition, and environmental management goals and are considered essential for developing a technically skilled workforce aligned with infrastructure development and the emerging green hydrogen sector,” Prof. Indongo said.
The students are enrolled at the University of Namibia, Namibia University of Science and Technology, International University of Management, Windhoek Vocational Training Centre, Rundu Vocational Training Centre, Namibia Institute of Technology, International Training College: Lingua, River Higher Institute of Technology and Triumphant College.
